Admiral THE HONOURABLE SIR Hubert George Brand, G.C.B.K.C.M.G.K.C.V.O., R.N. (20 May, 1870 – 14 December, 1955) was an officer of the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

On 10 June, 1891, he was confirmed in the rank of Sub-Lieutenant dated 14 September, 1889.[1]

Brand was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 30 June, 1892.[2]

He was promoted to the rank of Commander dated 1 September, 1902.[3]

On the occasion of the King's visit to Ireland Brand was appointed a Member of the Fourth Class of the Royal Victorian Order (M.V.O.) on 11 August, 1903.[4]

In 1904, he was captain of the destroyer H.M.S. Cherwell when she visited Kiel and valuable intelligence on German destroyer equipment and practices was obtained.[5]

Shortly after, he spent three years in the battleship Britannia, ending on 18 February, 1908.[6]

Brand was promoted to the rank of Captain on 31 December, 1907.[7] On 30 May, 1908, he was appointed in command of the first class protected cruiser Blenheim.[8] He was appointed in command of the armoured cruiser Good Hope on 5 February, 1909,[9] as Flag Captain to Rear-Admiral Frederick T. Hamilton in the Fifth Cruiser Squadron.

He was appointed in command of the armoured cruiser Drake in July 1909.

On 27 March, 1912 Brand was appointed to the scout cruiser Bellona for command of the Second Destroyer Flotilla.[10]

Brand succeeded Captain Sir Douglas E. R. Brownrigg, Bart. as Naval Attaché at Tokyo on 9 October, 1912.[11]

Great War

On the occasion of the King's birthday he was appointed an Additional Member of the Third Class, or Companion, in the Military Division of the Most Honourable Order of the Bath (C.B.) on 3 June, 1918.[12]

Post-War

Brand was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 12 February, 1919, vice Singer.[13] In recognition of his services during the war he was appointed an Additional Member of the Second Class, or Knight Commander, in the Most Distinguished Order of Saint Michael and Saint George (K.C.M.G.) on 5 April.[14] On 1 May he was appointed Rear-Admiral Commanding H.M. Yachts.[15]

On 4 April, 1922, Brand was appointed an Extra Equerry to the King.[16]

He was promoted to the rank of Vice-Admiral on 1 October, 1924, vice Bruen.[17]

On the occasion of the King's birthday brand was appointed an Ordinary Member of the Second Class, or Knight Commander, of the Military Division of the Order of the Bath (K.C.B.) on 3 June, 1927.[18]

On 11 June, 1928, he was promoted to the rank of Admiral, vice Fergusson.[19]

"In recognition of long and distinguished service in His Majesty's Navy," Brand was appointed an Ordinary Member of the Military Division of the First Class, or Knight Grand Cross (G.C.B.), in the Order of the Bath, dated 12 October, 1932.[20]
